The Tora and Art Foundation, in collaboration with the Sarah Vinitz Foundation, presents the inaugural edition of its itinerant "Les Autres..."(The Others) art show in Paris:
Paris, 15/10/2024
Inspired by the famous existentialist assertion by Jean-Paul Sartre, “L’enfer c’est les autres” (Hell is the Others), the first edition is set to open in Paris this fall, named
“Les Autres…”
The show, inspired by the philosophical and artistic legacy of challenging the norms, will feature a provocative collection of works by renowned contemporary artists, addressing the themes of xenophobia, identity, and drawing a parallel between the boundaries of what is considered art and what is deemed foreign hence subject to exclusion and, ultimately, xenophobia.
“Les Autres…” explores the fear of the unknown, the foreign, and the unfamiliar. By examining the role of art in breaking down social, cultural, and aesthetic barriers, the Sarah Vinitz Foundation aims to foster a broader dialogue on inclusion and acceptance.
Exhibition Manifesto
The manifesto of "Les Autres..." draws inspiration from the revolutionary art movements that originated in Paris over a century ago. From the Impressionists of the 1860s who defied academic norms to the radical ideas of Marcel Duchamp and Dadaism, Paris has always been a crucible of artistic revolution. This exhibition argues that just as art once broke free from the constraints of nature and traditional aesthetics, so too must we challenge societal barriers that label people as "foreign" or "other."
Globalization may have blurred the lines that separate us, but it has not eradicated fear of the unfamiliar. "Les Autres..." invites viewers to confront this fear and asks: How can art’s history of pushing boundaries and redefining the acceptable inspire us to embrace that which we don’t understand?
As Marcel Duchamp put the power in the hands of the viewer to determine what is art, this exhibition entrusts the audience with the responsibility to decide what defines the "other" and to question the barriers we build between ourselves and those we perceive as foreign.
Ultimately, the exhibition will reconnect with the genesis of the "woke" approach which aimed to fight for civil rights and inclusion rather than empowering the current cancel culture. By encouraging open dialogue and embracing diverse perspectives, the exhibition aims to foster understanding rather than censorship and division. It challenges the idea of exclusion and seeks to promote a more inclusive conversation that respects difference without resorting to the rejection of what is unfamiliar.
